Love sucks. Forget all of those fairytale movies about how the guy comes swooping in and rescues his damsel in distress and they fall madly in love and live happy ever after as soon as they defeat those bad guys. Love is NOT that simple. Behind all the butterflies and fairy tales, love can sometimes rear an ugly, heartbreaking side. I blame my cynical ways and nightmarish past relationships for that momentary rant about how much love can be a pain in the butt.

While the figure is higher among singles 29 per centsurprisingly it also includes six per cent who are actually part of a couple. For men in particular, not having a good job 27 per cent and not feeling financially comfortable 17 per cent are significant factors they believe are getting in the way of love, while women worry about trusting potential partners 46 per cent or that nobody will 'get' them 31 per cent.
The research also suggests that of the 15million adults that are currently single in the UK, almost a third 29 per cent think they won't find love. While almost one in five 19 per cent have been single for less than a year, four out of 10 41 per cent have been single for more than a decade.

For singles in particular, bad dates are a serious issue. Close to half of single people 44 per cent have had some kind of negative dating experience, according to the research.
The most common problem was that they just didn't like the same things as their dates 14 per centtheir dates only talk about themselves nine per cent or they have felt bombarded by the person after the date seven per cent. It doesn't feel like there is someone out there for me.
Given up on dating and love
I don't meet anyone new in my social circles. I don't feel very attractive.
I find it hard to trust people. People seem like they are not interested in me. I feel like I'm too old for dating. I can't find someone who truly gets me.
I'm not financially comfortable. I can be quite difficult. I don't meet anyone new at work.
As a result slightly more women 13 per cent than men 10 per cent have turned their back on love. But there is hope - which is good news for online dating site eHarmony, who commissioned the survey - because one in ten who had previously given up on love went on to find someone who was right for them. However, people need to be aware of self-fulfilling prophecies where our negative expectations stop us even looking for love, because the reality is that you're much more likely to make a meaningful connection if you believe in the possibility of it happening.
